To Love Him Is to Follow Him

But, If I Enter Paradise, I am afraid…

‘A’ishah reported that a man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and said: “O Messenger of Allah! Indeed, I love you more than I love myself, and I love you more than I love my family, and I love you more than I love my children. When I am at home and I think of you, I am unable to contain myself until I can come to you and look at you. When I think about my death and your death, I know that when you enter Paradise, you will be raised to where the Prophets are. But, if I enter Paradise, I am afraid: will I be able to see you?”

So, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) did not answer him at all until Jibril revealed to him: {“And whoever obeys Allah and the Messenger, then they will be in the company of those on whom Allah has bestowed His Grace – of the Prophets, the truthful, the martyrs and the righteous. And how excellent these companions are!”} [an-Nisa'; 69]

(‘Silsilat al-Ahadith as-Sahihah’; #2933)

It has been related by al-Bukhaaree and Muslim from `Abdullaah bin Mas`ood, radiyallaahu `anhu, that he said: A man came to the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam, and said: O Messenger of Allaah! What do you say of a man who loves a people and never joins them? The Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam, said: The person will be with those whom he loves. [Agreed upon. al-Bukhaaree 10/557, Muslim 3/2034, and the wording is from al-Bukhaaree]

Shaykh Al-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: “Loving Allaah and His Messenger is the greatest action that faith obligates, it is the greatest tenet of faith itself and the most glorified fundamental of it. Indeed loving Allaah and his Messenger is the foundation for all deeds”.Sahl, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: “Whoever does not feel that the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam has full rights of command over him at all times will never taste the sweetness of following the Sunnah because the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam has said: “None of you will be a true believer until I am more beloved to him than himself”.

Ibn Hajar, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: “An evidence of this love is if somebody were to favour losing something extremely precious to themselves rather than lose the chance to see Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam, if indeed it were possible for them to see him. Indeed missing out on an opportunity to see the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam is harsher and more heart-breaking for a person than losing extremely precious thing. If this were not the case, then the description of love would not be applicable to such a person. Moreover, the manifestation of love is not restricted to that, but also applies to supporting his Sunnah, defending what he came with and fighting those who opposes it.”

Allaah says that which translates as: “You will not find a people who believe in Allaah and the Last Day having affection for those who oppose Allaah and His Messenger, even if they were their fathers or their sons or their brothers or their kindred. Those – He has decreed within their hearts faith and supported them with spirit from Him. And We will admit them to gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide eternally. Allaah is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him – those are the party of Allaah. Unquestionably, the party of Allaah – they are the successful.” (Al-Mujaadilah: 22)

Sufyaan Ath-Thawri, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: “To love him (i.e., the Messenger sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) is to follow him.”
