What The Snow Brought In

SnowRain….looked upon as a sign of mercy from the Creator for it gives life to that which is dead and by the permission of our Lord allows vegetation to come forth. This was a constant reminder for me every time I complained about droplets that fell from the heavens. So it didn’t matter that my jelbab was wet, that driving back to visit my parents in Central Jersey was a nightmare, that not being able to open the windows for a breeze was possible; it didn’t matter for this Mercy was the same that fell on the Muslims in Badr.

But, what about the snow? Little did I know what the snow would bring in. Everyone was talking about it, the double snow storm to hit the Northeast and there was Abu Zayna bundled up to go salt what seemed to be the world :) Now what exactly did the snow bring in? Simple answer: the most Precious of Provisions :)

Snow: There’s something indescribable about snowflakes cascading from above , it seems as though you’re in a snow globe, you can’t hear the chaos of the honking cars, nor the screams of the kids throwing snowballs. All around you there is this silence as the beauty of Allah descends from the heavens, white, pure and cold.

ZamZam: It’s her first winter you know, this is her first experience of the trials and tribulations of the Dunya. She intently watched from the window above as her Baba shoveled, seeing him from afar was a delight and I’m sure his surroundings added to the excitement. SNOW!!! She saw it, this strange substance brought with it cold, sniffles, layers of clothing, and a day of indoor fun.

Abu Zayna: He was ready, armed and dangerous with his gloves, winter cap, poofy jacket, boots and shovel. He threw snowballs from below which surprised ZamZam and contemplated whether or not to shovel the driveway of the old neighbor next door. Seeing how Tom would call the cops even if you shot him a glance Abu Zayna decided perhaps it wasn’t such a great idea, at least not yet.

For my family the snow brought in what we needed most, each other. We were able to sit back and enjoy one another’s company as well as, the weather which overtook our mundane schedule. As precious provisions to one another we held on tight to these few moments of enjoying the view that was before us: ZamZam in her winter wonderland.

With the coming of snow we are also reminded of another huge blessing, long nights for salah and short days for fasting :) Alhamdulilah.

Absolutely! SubhanAllah just got another email reminder of that, these winter days are great for making up those missed fasts or just fasting extra and of course the long nights are a treat for reciting Quran and praying alone or with your spouse ;)
